Rad Lab - UC Berkeley Case Study

Rad Lab at University of California, Berkeley has implemented Auto Shutdown Manager with wireless power meters to accurately measure energy and cost savings in real time. While they have equipped hundreds of computers with Auto Shutdown Manager, 77 of those computers use ACme wireless power meters, developed by Prof. Dr. Culler and his team of Ph.D. students. Those 77 computers achieved a reduction in PC energy consumption of 85% or over 35.000 kWh in 6 months. That converts into savings of more than $4000 for 100 PC’s. Measurements revealed that over 60% of computers equipped with Auto Shutdown Manager have energy savings of 90% or more. [see Graph 1]

Here is a real time graph of the current conservation and total savings, courtesy of Rad Lab, Prof. Dr. Culler.

The first graph shows that 60% of the measured computers are reducing their power consumption by 90% using Auto Shutdown Manager versus the prior baseline without automatic computer power management.

The second graph shows the cumulative power savings across the network. UC Berkeley Rad Lab is able to reduce their power consumption across all network computers by 79%!
